The fishing industry has always been an important part of the city's development, but in the recent years there have been some changes. Now much of the work in the primary industry have gone over to the service industry, and in 2004 over 87% of the employees in Bodø municipality worked in service industries.
There are also many North-Norwegian companies that have their headquarters in the city, among these are Widerøe and Nordlandsbanken. Bodø is also a city with a large opportunities for education within economics, management, fishing industry and social education. In addition to this Bodø is the only town in Norway a part from Oslo that offers police education.
Since the 1990s Bodø has been one of the cities in Norway with the strongest population growth and currently has over 46 000 inhabitants, among them several hundred students. Situated just north of the Arctic Circle they have midnight sun from June 4th to July 8th. The city is also described to be the capital of Nordland county, and is the second largest in the Northeren part of Norway.
